Faceless Portraits

As a portrait photographer, I am often focused on the clients face, eyes, expression. All of these we would consider important in photography, but sometimes we look away from the camera to capture the essence of a personality. I've been told that when you photograph a client looking at the camera, you capture what they look like. When you photograph them looking away from the camera, you capture who they are. There are times when I spend too much time with the normal photograph, but love doing the different photos! Most of the time the client enjoys that extra photo too!

Sunny Days

Sunny Days

This photo was planned from top to bottom. I knew the field was incredible, the model was excellent and I loved the overall style of this session. We took many photos that day, but something about this photos showed how graceful she really was. I really wanted to make the viewer feel the warmth of the field and the beautiful setting.

Sunset Silhouette

Sunset Silhouette

This photo was a complete surprise! We were packing up the car and chatting about the session when the sky just exploded with color. We ran to the top of the hill. Normally I would have used my flash to capture the sky and the subject, but we just didn't have time. I knew it would be a silhouette and we would need to capture as much detail as possible. I was thrilled with how crisp the photo came out and how vibrant the sky was too!

Inspiration

Almost every portrait session I am inspired by the person I'm photographing. Their hobbies, passions, personalities and their style all play into our vision of what a session could be. Sometimes we are great at planning it all out and sometimes it just happens. Part of my goal during a session is to create an environment that allows my clients to feel comfortable. We all look great when we are comfortable. We all ore comfortable when we are doing things that we like to do. Environment+passion+comfortable=great photos! Sometimes that means that they won't be looking at the camera and I'm ok with that.

“People feel good in front of the camera only when you learn to help them feel comfortable being there! It is about infusing them with your passion and educating them about the how much they will enjoy the process.”

It's All About Planning...

Let's make it happen today! Sometimes you just have to start a plan and not know what is going to happen. But if you don't start, it won't happen. I just talked to someone who was desperate for a session with the fall leaves, but I wasn't available. So I called around and discovered that everyone I asked wasn't available either. Next week there may be leaves but there's a chance there won't be. Make a plan today!
